“I was deeply disturbed to learn of the conditions that the vast majority of pigs endure in Australia. I didn’t know and I’m sure most Australian are unaware of the suffering of these animals.

To confine any animal this way and deny them even the ability to exercise is so obviously wrong. To do it on the basis of profit makes it even more wrong.

As a woman, it horrifies me that this industry treats many thousands of female pigs as breeding machines, denying them their most innate needs as a mother, a comfortable area in which they can give birth to their piglets and being able to interact with and nurture their young.

These poor animals are allowed to exist for one reason only—to produce piglets for as long as their bodies remain capable of doing so.

We know that pigs are intelligent and social animals. To understand what they must endure in these facilities day after day, week after week, all we need to do is look at life through their eyes. We are not providing them with a single reason to want to wake up each day. This cannot be allowed to continue in Australia."
